Are Getting Married

May 31st, 2025

OUR STORY

Nicole grew up in Hong Kong and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area after high school. She graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Economics and a minor in Public Policy. She has worked in the non-profit and government sectors. Recently, Nicole has been re-focusing on creative development taking classes in oil painting and other areas of the creative arts.

Daniel was born in London. When he was six, he moved to Maine after a six-month international trip with his parents. During that trip, he visited Hong Kong and always jokes about first meeting Nicole there when they were both children. He studied business at the University of Michigan and is currently a Principal at a healthcare related finance firm in Maryland.

Daniel and Nicole first met in California during the summer of 2019. They enjoyed traveling on the West Coast until COVID hit at which point they began spending a lot of time with Nicole’s family in the East Bay. They made the best of the strange times: enjoying driveway haircuts, unlimited Chinese herbal soups, funny-sounding one-way multi-language conversations, and doing lots of gardening. They converted the house’s front yard from parking into a large garden, planting everything from tomatoes to an avocado tree! The avocado tree bore fruit in the 2024 summer for the very first time, and it is over 15 feet tall!

As much as the couple likes California, an opportunity arose in late 2020, and they decided to move east to Washington D.C. They spent their first two years living in an apartment in the Chinatown/Gallery Place neighborhood. In the spring of 2023, they moved into their forever home on Capital Hill. Despite not knowing much about the city before moving, the couple has grown to love the district and has a great group of friends in the area.

In November 2022, the third member of the family arrived when Nicole picked up Macaron from a parking lot in the middle of nowhere in Maryland! Nicole used to be scared of dogs. How ironic as her Zodiac Sign is also a dog! Nicole was frightened when she had to pick up Macaron alone, but it turned out that Macaron was even more frightened than Nicole! The two of them spent the first night sleeping on a yoga mat together. Dan and Nicole love Macaron very much and spend lots of their free time taking her on trips around DC and the greater DMV (DC metro area - DC, Maryland, Virginia).

Dress Code 穿著

Our dress code is formal evening attire. Please be aware that our wedding will be outdoors. The temperature in DC in late May is difficult to predict. It could be hot or cool. We encourage wearing your culture’s attire.

Ladies: our wedding color theme will be a pastel palette, so pastel-colored dresses are suggested, but not required. The length of the dress is preferably below the knee.

Gentlemen: Dark-colored suit with a tie. Tuxes are appropriate, but not required.

Registry

Your presence at our wedding is the best present! We do not have a gift registry and ask people not to give gifts. However, if you would like to give a present to mark the occasion, we would prefer to receive red envelopes with money in them for our honeymoon and travel fund. In Chinese culture, guests normally gift red envelopes as a blessing to the couple. We will provide red envelopes at the entry on the wedding day. You can arrive early to write and prepare the gift!

At the back of the red envelope, it is typical to have the couple’s name at the top, the blessings in the middle, and your (and your partner's) name at the bottom.

Museums

DC is well-known for its museums. While the vast majority of the museums in DC are free, many are very large, so can take hours to a full day to see everything, and can be overwhelming. For those who do want to visit a museum during their time here, we have listed our favorite museums by the amount of time you should anticipate spending there.

Large Museums

For large museums, our favorites are:

  • National Gallery of Art

  • African American History Museum (reserve timed entry in advance)

  • National Portrait Gallery (see paintings of all of our presidents and a range of American art from different periods)

Small Museums

For smaller, more digestible museums:

  • Library of Congress

  • Chinese American Museum

  • ARTECHOUSE (this requires an entry fee, but it is very cool. It hosts interactive and immersive exhibits.)

  • Planet Word (for the folks who are curious about languages or love karaoke!)

  • ARTECHOUSE(這需要入場費,但非常酷,是個互動式的展覽)

  • Planet Word(推薦給對語言有興趣或喜歡卡拉 OK 的人)

Nature & WAlking

  • National Arboretum: the Bonsai museum in National Arboretum is incredible and is inside the National Arboretum, which is a big park that includes several gardens and all 50 state trees!

  • Metropolitan Bike Trail: an 11-mile-long walking and biking trail near the couple’s house, the trail goes by several parks, mural walls, as well as restaurants and bars.

  • National Botanic Garden: the oldest continually operating botanic garden in the United States since 1850!
